Our Director: Hal Sundquist

Hal SundquistHal Sundquist has been involved with music for most of his life. He played trombone through high school and much of college, especially enjoying playing in jazz bands, but also in marching and concert bands. Through many quirks of fate, he settled into voice and choral music at San Jose State University. After graduating with honors, he taught in San Mateo at Turnbull Middle School, San Mateo High School, Borel Middle School, and Abbott Middle School. He retired in 2005 after 38 years in the district.

He sang leading roles with West Bay Opera in Othello, Fidelio, Manon, and Pagliacci, as well as various roles in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, including Mikado, Iolanthe, and The Gondoliers. He has also been a soloist with Saratoga Symphony, South Bay Symphony and various churches throughout the peninsula and Santa Clara Valley.

Hal has directed church choirs in Portola Valley, Los Gatos, San Jose, and most recently, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Saratoga. He was proud to direct Sunnyvale Singers from 1988 to 1998, taking them on a tour to Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic in the summer of 1993. It is our great pleasure that he returned to direct the Sunnyvale Singers in 2007, and we look forward to continuing our great relationship. We continue to appreciate his musical skill, his guidance and his terrible jokes!
